Michael Vick

Mr. Brando Foster, originally uploaded by kfoz.

Although you'd never guess it from this photo, Brando doesn't read the papers.

And he doesn't watch the news either. If he did he might have been surprised at Larry King last night.

A friend called me from New York. Turn on Larry King, she said. He's got a pit bull on his desk and it looks just like Brando.

But I wasn't near a TV, so we missed it. But it reminded me that haven't posted anything about the disgusting Michael Vick situation. What's striking at this point is how shocked and angry most of the public seems to be. Appropriately. But for anyone who owns or works with pit bulls, we already know that there are thousands of Michael Vicks out there. What is extraordinary to us is that the case is being prosecuted, because usually even the authorities tend to feel, like some of Vick's teammates, that training pit bulls to fight, abusing them, or even killing them, isn't a crime. Because for them, pit bulls aren't dogs at all.

Of course, I have more to say, but it'll have to wait. I'm working on a longer piece that will be appearing, somewhere, soon.

just had to tell you how much I enjoyed your book.I volunteered for 5 wks in SLidell,in the aftermath of Katrina, and was saddened by the condition of many of the dogs we rescued. There was a particular red female pit who captured my heart. Sadly when I returned to adopt her I discovered that she had been reclaimed by her owner. I had promised her a better life in Atlanta, and wept that she had returned to a life of squalor and breeding. The memory haunts me.
my most recent foster ( aka permanent addition) is a 10 yo border collie mix with testicular ca and HW.He was tied to the door of AC, and due to be gassed. What a lucky fellow he is now.. he loves his 400 thread count sheets.
I am guardian to 6 pups, and like you can see them when no one else does.
Thank you again for your compassion.

I was wondering if you were going to mention this. If he gets away with this, there will be many upset dog owners (and non-dog owners). I'll be one of them.

Ken,

While I am of the belief that everyone is innocent until proven guilty (yes right-wingers this is actually what our leaders so many years ago intended), the Vick indictment is pretty damning. Regardless of his involvement, the situation is disgusting and uttering heartbreaking. Even worse in my parts is the backlash against pit bulls, which has put me on the defensive since the story has broke. Brando & Sula are my usual examples of sweet, well mannered pit bulls. Large lap dogs that love human companionship. Sadly, too many people out there are calling themselves "dog experts" and referring to them as a lost breed or capable of snapping on a whim and lashing out against whoever happens to be around them. I don't know where they derive this crap from, but we need more advocates like you out there to educate and clarify for this great breed.

BTW, I will be in NO November 9th through the 12th if you around. I would love to hang out and see the pack.

Take care,

Tom
