Obama Wins!

Clinton 2008, originally uploaded by kfoz.

In spite of the problems at the polls, Obama won Louisiana tonight, and Nebraska, and Washington. So, if you really want to make Brando happy, go to his fundraising page now!

Ooops: Louisiana voters told they can't vote

Perhaps this is why Hillary didn't bother campaigning here. Throughout the day there have been widespread reports of people being turned away, told that they either were not registered, or had not changed their affiliation in time. Some of these reports came directly into my email inbox, so I'm not just relying on the Obama campaign. And, of course, this is a tactic that has been used in the past. You might say that no one would know who to turn away, since you can't tell who they might be voting for. But recently registered voters are always more likely to be supporting a new political figure (like Obama) than an established one (like Clinton.) So the newly inspired are rejected at the polls.

It really is time for a change.

Online chat tonight at

This morning the dogs and I took our last walk with Cornbread, the Boudreaux pit bull who lives down the block and is moving to Atlanta this evening. Then I went to vote, picked up a free ash tree at Parkway Partners, a half dozen tomato plants, a satsuma tree, and a few other odds and ends. Stopped at the farmers market for milk, cheese, tomatoes and hummus. And now I'm working at Beth's Books for the afternoon.

Tonight, at 10pm ET, I'll be doing a live chat at, so please join me if you can.

Sula's latest photo shoot...and an offer from The Sula Foundation

Yesterday morning we had a photo shoot on our porch. I had thought that it was for Preservation in Print, the publication of the Preservation Resource Center. They had called last week when I was in New York, and I had quickly agreed to have them come down and do whatever they needed. And then, of course, I began hatching my plan to slip Sula into the photo. When they arrived yesterday, I discovered that it was actually for St. Charles Avenue Magazine--for the cover, I think, although obviously I'm easily confused these days. A group of people gathered on the steps to promote the Julia Jump annual gala, while Sula and I sat off to the side, but still in the frame of the photo. If she isn't cropped out, I'm sure Sula will be the first pit bull featured on the cover of St. Charles Avenue.

Meanwhile, The Sula Foundation now has an official checking account, which means we can now accept contributions to help pay for our pit bull vaccination clinics and educational programs. And if you make a donation of $20 or more, well send you a signed copy of The Dogs Who Found Me. You can donate here:

The problem with Hillary

A couple of people have asked why I'm not supporting Hillary Clinton. And I've avoided answering it, because...well, because I just don't even want to acknowledge her I guess. The truth is I voted for her for Senate in New York. And I quickly saw that she was willing to reverse her positions any time it was convenient for her career. I wrote to her expressing my disappointment on a number of issues, including the war. I didn't expect a reply, but was shocked to be put on a "Friends of Hillary" email list that sent frequent, frequent updates on her activities. I asked to be removed, more than once, and I still get them today.

Then, in 2004, I was working as a volunteer on another campaign and got to see first hand the really sickening, self-serving and destructive tactics of the Clinton machine. And it was then that I knew I would never be able to vote for her again.

More recently, she's been outright lying not only about her own record, but also about Obama's. Here's a video in which a former Clinton team member describes how they intentionally told lies about Obama's record on women's rights:

It's an old political tactic. Release misinformation just before an important vote, then distance yourself from the claim later.

Now I'll get back to some more innocuous blogging.

Obama comes to New Orleans

Barack Obama will be speaking at Tulane University Thursday Morning, at Fogelman Arena, at 9:45am. Doors open at 7:45. No signs or banners allowed, and, I'm assuming, no dogs either.

I'll be updating this a bit later...
