How to Stay Sane: a newsletter

Hello from my house to yours,

I don't have to tell you what a strange and difficult time we are all having. But I did want to share with you some things that might help you occupy your time, relax, and reduce stress. We all have a lot of information available to us via the internet, but sometimes having a list helps us get to things that are right in front of us. On a stress-reduction seminar last night, Jessica Dolce reminded everyone that lists are good, helping others are good, and it is important to take some time for ourselves, breath and recognize our present surroundings. Fortunately, we nothing else to do or get to, many programs and services are being offered online, for free, or at very little cost.

Films you haven't seen

  1. Bacurau. This film, which I wrote about recently for Bomb, opened last two weeks ago in New York and was due to play all across the country. Now it is available online for $12 with a portion of the proceeds going to Film at Lincoln Center and other independent cinemas. Gather your quarantine mates around and watch it via KinoNow, a new streaming service from KinoLorber that will be sharing proceeds with theaters around the country.
  2. The Criterion Channel. Now offering a two-week free trial, The Criterion Channel streams films and behind the scenes interviews and commentary on classics and more recent films, including a collection of Catherine Deneuve films, old comedies like Cactus Flower, Olivier Assayas's three-part thriller Carlos, Truffaut's classic Day for Night and others.
  3. MUBI. A rotating collection of thirty independent and foreign films each month. And what a deal: currently they are offering three months access for just $1.
  4. The Film Comment Podcast. Film Comment Magazine editors Nick and Devika talk about festival highlights and favorite films with additional guests and curators. I've been diving into this archive for months during my commute, and they've picked up the pace with additional episodes to keep themselves sane. In addition to being available on their website, its also on Spotify and wherever you get your podcasts.

Theater online

  1. The Metropolitan Opera: A new Opera streams every night at the Met.
  2. Joe's Pub/The Public Theater: Joe's Pub is broadcasting concerts three nights a week and also has lots of highlights available on their YouTube channel.
  3. Broadway HD: Now offering a one week free trial, with lots of classic and contemporary drama and musicals to stream.
  4. Broadway World Living Room Concerts: A variety of broadway performers are streaming from their apartments each night, with links available here.

Workouts with great trainers

  1. TotalBoxer: A great North London boxing gym, and the home of BoxingYoga! They are launching their OnDemand program any day now. And you can also get access for ten pounds to the BoxingYoga class or enroll in their certification program.
  2. WTF Boxing in NYC has been offering classes via their website.
  3. Rumble Boxing is also offering shadow boxing classes, ab workouts and even a rescheduled wedding on Instagram.

Looking for a thermometer? Few things are as essential, and as hard to come by, these days. But you can find them in baby grooming kits or first aid kits that are still on shelves and available online .

With hope,

Ken Foster
